Hi Lex, I have just stumbled across your blog and I just want to say keep doing what you're doing! I graduated this year with a Journalism & Film and Media degree and felt very lost. I'm currently thinking about applying for a post-grad in Information and Library Studies and wish I could go to one of your New Professionals Informations Days but I'm currently in Vancouver for the year. I will be sure to read through your blog and the others you have linked here.
Thanks for putting the information out there to help people like me!

It was a very inspiring talk: engaging, personal and thoughtful. And it was lovely to meet you (albeit very briefly)! I'll be referring as many people as possible to your awesome Prezi :D

Thanks Lex, that does answer it. In the same way that it's too easy to think that everyone else is doing more than oneself, it's easy to think that everyone else jumps into blogging (or whatever) with a fully-formed plan.

Thanks for stopping by everyone!

@GITM: It happened over time. When I first started blogging I didn't have a clear purpose and it was very personal. I wrote about things I'd read, the films I'd seen or the conversations I had simply to get back into a routine of writing before heading back to university.

When I started library school I wrote a few times about what I was up to; when I was writing my dissertation you'll see I mostly wrote about Iran and Internet censorship etc. Now that I work full time and am taking control of my own career development my focus has shifted again. It's more professional now in terms of content but it's still a very personal blog.

When I joined the CILIP bloggers landscape I was concerned that my blog wasn't professional enough - there's even stuff about trepanning on here - but was assured that it's OK to have other interests! And in fact this is exactly what they were looking for.

Early on I struggled a lot with the idea of having a professional profile as well as a personal one (you can see this ins a lot of my earlier posts about Twitter) but it got too difficult to maintain and I began to except I am what I am and I have a lot of interests I want representing here.

I now actively decide what information I want widely available - this is why doing vanity searches on Google etc are so important. I'm happy for people to know these things about me. I want to talk to librarians about marine conservation, I want to talk to vegans about libraries for example because I want to advocate all of these things.

Sorry that's so long winded but I hope it answered your question.

Lex - I was wondering what your thoughts are about showing your 'personal' side as well as the professional. In your prezi you note that Google not only knows your name and that you're a librarian, but also that you're vegan, have a great record collection, and work for the sea shepherd conservation society. Did you actively decide to make all of that information widely available, or did it happen over time? Did you start out thinking it would be just personal or just professional, or does that distinction not really bother you?

Sorry - a bit long and rambly. Would have been easier to ask in person!
